Insight into daily life in Aran Islands in time gone by.
I enjoy this book very much Story of the Aran Islands in 1900s. It's very elegant written. I love this book especially when it's free!
Lyrical prose....nonfiction that reads like a fairy tale! So atmospheric!
An ethnography without pretense, written by one of Ireland's greatest writers, this book is a wonderful evocation of a bygone era, both the the people whose lives Synge documents and his own thoughts about them.
My mother left Donegal about the time that Synge was writing his plays. His visits to the Aran Islands inspired his works, as one can see scenes from his plays in scenes he described here. The primitive life on a Donegal farm was not too different. Synge learned then...taught me now...
