The 458th was formed as an amphibian truck company (DUKW) in 1943, and participated in the Normandy Invasion, campaigns in France, Rhineland and Central Europe. The 458th went to Vietnam in 1966 with LARC-V's to assist in unloading 20.9 million tons of ship's cargo onto beaches in Vietnam. As the stockpiles of cargo grew, so did the resistance from the Viet Cong. LARC's were fitted with .50 caliber machine guns and began to provide port security rather than unloading cargo. This si the story of a LARC-V operator in Vietnam.

The book recounts his time serving his country in Vietnam and finally returning home. It was very interesting.
I only liked it because I don't remember much that went on// worked my reg. job and also had a second job from 6pm to 12mid each evening//
Could not put it down! Felt like Ted was right there in the room talking about his very unique experiences in Vietnam. The pictures are great! Ted's real-life story could easily be made into a movie.

Fascinating and funny. Helpful information of a group of dedicated servicemen in a war that was misunderstood in many ways. The story of the boat the men built was worth reading, if nothing else. Necessity is the mother of invention was never more evident than the ways these men found to bring their dream boat to fruition. Well written and easy to become involved in the 458th!
